The Journey to Travel Nursing
The journey began when you answered the call to help others. Whether that call came from a current nurse, an old friend, or a family member, you made the decision and committed to the path. You crushed O-Chem, nailed all your clinicals, and went to all the after-hours sessions. Anatomy was easy but binge watching Grey’s Anatomy never helped.
Guilty pleasures are the best medicine anyways.
Starting Travel Nursing
Just after one year, you now have just enough experience under your belt to start travel nursing. You’ve heard it all before: Travel nurses get better pay (make it double), a chance to travel, a chance to pick hospitals without commitment, a chance to help underserved areas, and a chance to land a longer contract at the right hospital.
So now you’re a traveling nurse and you are set up through an agency. The contracts are found for you (and generally last 13 weeks) and you know the rules when starting at a new location - always be yourself, be kind, be courteous, never cause ripples nor disruptions in the way things are, and never get sassy with the charge nurse.
Following those rules might even get you an extension offer. Sweet!
Housing Options for Travel Nurses
As a travel nurse, you can go through your agency to find housing, or you can try to find housing on your own. Your agency will usually cover everything including searching for housing through their own networks, negotiating contracts, signing the lease on your behalf, will cover utilities, and ensure everything is ready for your arrival.
Yet going through your network can cause a few snags. You generally won’t get a say about where you’ll live nor will your location be ideal. Your short-term furnished options are in the hands of your agency and is up to their limited network and resources. Hiccups happen and they happen often.
Choosing housing through them isn’t always limited to your agency. You can take the housing stipend option and go about it on your own. We all know how hard and daunting it is trying to find a new place to live…
